It had all the components of the news of the day, but none of its flavour.
That was what made the difference!
It was, in fact, a marked departure from the news of the day. Newsday’s advertising, in days ahead, the building-up to this morning had teased of the coming of the ‘Good News.’ This was Good News fleshed and flashed in the headlines of a new newspaper about life, not death, not despair, but about hope, success and triumph. It was about ‘5000 Lives Saved.’But there was more to that first article, something that has been largely overlooked in all assessments of Newsday’s birth to date. Why these early pieces of my mid-journalism career, bore a marked brand of difference, why it was a signal for the new journalism I continue to champion. What was it?
